Where the white cover sits
Cover top PDF takes one PDF and a whole number of points. The field is named Points and it starts at 72. The download is one file named covered.pdf. The worker loads the file with pdf-lib and keeps the same document. It paints an opaque white rectangle over the top of each page media box, using the full media width. On a page that measures 200 by 100 points, a value of 40 paints a rectangle that starts at y 60, is 200 points wide, and is 40 points tall. Text drawn at y 70 that says TOP sits under that white. Text drawn at y 20 that says LOW stays in the open band. Both strings stay in the content stream, because the marks are covered and not deleted. The media box stays 200 by 100 points. A link whose URI is https://example.com/keep-link stays. The document title Keep Title stays. A page rotated 90 degrees keeps that rotation, and the rectangle still follows the media box. Nothing is rasterized. This is not Crop PDF, which shrinks the crop box. This is not Split horizontal PDF, which writes split-horizontal.pdf. This is not Add watermark. The original file on disk is not rewritten. A value of 99 on a page 100 points tall leaves one point uncovered. A value that would leave less than one point stops before any page is painted.
The cover runs in this tab with the open-source workers. The file is not uploaded. There is no GridFS copy. Closing the tab drops the copy. The browser downloads covered.pdf. Crop PDF changes the crop box. The Word page at /pdf-to-word uploads.
There is no page cap on this cover. The tab has to hold the file. This page does not need a pass. A day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. A year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to cover the top of a page here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress.
An empty file stops with "This PDF could not be read." Bytes that are not a PDF stop with the same sentence. A file with no pages stops with "This PDF has no pages." A value that is not a whole number greater than 0 stops with "Enter a whole number of points." Zero, a fraction, and a negative number all use that sentence. When the white rectangle would leave less than one point of media height, the tool stops with "Leave at least one point of the page." No page is painted in that case. A locked file stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined" when that is the pdf-lib error. Unlock PDF is the separate page.
Steps
- Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
- Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
- Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.
Questions
How tall is the white cover?
The Points field names the height and starts at 72. The rectangle is that tall and as wide as the media box. It sits on the top of the media box. The download is covered.pdf.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The cover runs in this tab. The file is not uploaded. Closing the tab drops the copy. You get one file named covered.pdf. The page at /pdf-to-word uploads.
Does the text underneath stay?
Yes. Text that says TOP stays in the content stream under the white. Text that says LOW stays in the open band. The media box size stays. A rotation of 90 degrees stays. The title Keep Title stays. The link stays.
Does this page need the $6 day pass?
No. A $6 day pass lasts 24 hours, is charged once, and does not renew. A $60 year lasts 365 days. Neither charge is required to cover the top of a page here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool.
