What this nine-page sheet changes

Nine-up PDF takes one PDF and builds a new portrait US Letter sheet. The sheet is 612 by 792 points. A margin of 36 points sits on every edge, and a 36 point gutter sits between the cells of a 3 by 3 grid. Reading order goes left to right, then top to bottom. Page 1 sits at the top left, page 2 in the top middle, and page 3 at the top right. Pages 4, 5, and 6 fill the middle row from left to right. Pages 7, 8, and 9 fill the bottom row from left to right. The next nine pages open another sheet. A short last group leaves the unused cells empty. Each source page is drawn with embedPage inside its cell. pdf-lib 1.17 reads the media box, so a rotation of 90 or 270 swaps width and height before the fit. The smaller ratio keeps the aspect. This is not a booklet, and the page order is not rearranged for folding. Four-up PDF uses four cells and can also choose A4. Two-up PDF uses a landscape sheet with two cells. Annotations and form fields are not copied. The download is one PDF named nine-up.pdf, not a zip.

The grid runs in this tab with the open-source workers. The file is not uploaded. There is no GridFS copy. Open the network panel, drop a PDF, and that file should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. The browser downloads nine-up.pdf. Four-up PDF places four pages on Letter or A4. Two-up PDF places two pages on a landscape sheet. Booklet PDF rearranges pages for a fold. The Word page at /pdf-to-word uploads.

There is no page cap on this tool. The tab has to hold the file. There is no account on this page. This page does not need a pass. The day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. The year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to place nine pages here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress.

An empty file, or bytes that are not a PDF, fails with "This PDF could not be read." A PDF with no pages fails with "This PDF has no pages." A locked PDF stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined", because the worker cannot read the encrypted page. Unlock PDF is the separate page. This page does not ask for a password and does not guess one.

Steps

  1. Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
  2. Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
  3. Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.

Questions

Does nine-up crop, stretch, or make a booklet?

No. Each source page is scaled to fit one cell of the portrait Letter grid and centered there. The aspect stays. The worker does not crop and does not stretch. This is not a booklet and it does not reorder pages for folding. A short last sheet leaves empty cells.

Does nine-up upload the PDF?

No. It runs in this tab. The file is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. You get one file named nine-up.pdf, and the Word page is the one that uploads.

Do the words stay selectable?

Yes, when the source had standard-font text. embedPage keeps that text, so a page that says Hello still yields Hello. pdf-lib does not turn the page into a picture. Annotations and form fields are not copied onto the new sheet.

Does this page need a pass?

No. This page does not need a pass. There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. The day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. The year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to place nine pages here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool.
