What this author writes
Set PDF author takes one PDF and a text field labeled Author. The field name is author. The input has maxLength 200, and the worker trims the text. The worker loads the file with pdf-lib and sets updateMetadata to false, so Producer and the modification date stay. It sets the info dictionary Author to that exact trimmed string. SECRET-AUTHOR is stored as SECRET-AUTHOR. It does not clear Title, so KEEP-TITLE stays KEEP-TITLE. It does not clear Subject, so KEEP-SUBJECT stays KEEP-SUBJECT. It does not clear the catalog XMP stream, so a planted marker SECRET-XMP-MARKER remains. Keywords, Creator, Producer, and the two dates stay. The page drawing stays, and selectable words stay selectable. The download is one PDF named authored.pdf. It is not a zip. The original file on the computer is not rewritten. This is not Set PDF title, which writes the info dictionary Title and leaves Author. This is not Remove PDF info, which clears the info dictionary and leaves the XMP stream. This is not Remove PDF metadata, which also deletes the catalog metadata stream. Nothing is rasterized. An author of exactly 200 characters after trimming is kept. Whitespace around the name is removed before the write. The page count stays the same, and a page that is 200 by 100 points stays 200 by 100 points. Text that says KEEP stays on the page.
The write runs in this tab with the open-source workers. The file is not uploaded. There is no GridFS copy. Open the network panel, drop a PDF, and that file should not appear as an upload. The author field is not sent to a server either. Closing the tab drops the copy. The browser downloads authored.pdf. Set PDF title writes the Title and leaves Author. Remove PDF info clears the dictionary. Remove PDF metadata also drops the XMP stream. The Word page at /pdf-to-word uploads.
There is no page cap on this write. The tab has to hold the file. This page does not need a pass. A day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. A year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to set an author here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress.
An empty or unreadable file stops with "This PDF could not be read." A file with no pages stops with "This PDF has no pages." An empty author stops with "Enter an author." Text longer than 200 characters stops with "Use 200 characters or fewer." A locked file stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined". Unlock PDF is the separate page. This page does not ask for a password and does not guess one.
Steps
- Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
- Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
- Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.
Questions
What author is written?
The text in the field labeled Author, after the worker trims it. The input has maxLength 200. Empty text, or whitespace only, fails with "Enter an author." More than 200 characters after trimming fails with "Use 200 characters or fewer." The worker writes that trimmed string as the info dictionary Author. A value SECRET-AUTHOR is stored as SECRET-AUTHOR. Title is not the field this page writes.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. The write runs in this tab. The file is not uploaded. Closing the tab drops the copy. You get one PDF named authored.pdf. The Word page uploads.
Do Title and the XMP stream stay?
Yes. Title stays. A value KEEP-TITLE stays KEEP-TITLE. Subject stays. A value KEEP-SUBJECT stays KEEP-SUBJECT. The catalog XMP stream stays, including a planted marker SECRET-XMP-MARKER. This is not Remove PDF info and not Remove PDF metadata.
Does this page need the $6 day pass?
No. A $6 day pass lasts 24 hours, is charged once, and does not renew. A $60 year lasts 365 days. Neither charge is required to set an author here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool.
