What this unlock removes
Unlock PDF takes one PDF and a password the visitor already knows. The field is labeled Password you already know. It is type=password, and autocomplete is off. An empty field stops with "Enter the password you already know." The worker decrypts with that string and does not try a second guess. The download is one PDF named unlocked.pdf. It is not a zip. The original file on the computer is not rewritten. The result is still a PDF. It is not Word and not a picture. PDF Commons does not add its own watermark, logo, or trial line. This page does not choose a new password. Protect PDF is the page that encrypts.
This runs in the browser tab, using the in-browser worker. The PDF is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, type the password you already know, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Decryption stays in the tab, and the browser offers unlocked.pdf as the download. Closing the tab drops the copy. The form does not send the file anywhere else, and it does not ask for an email.
There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. The tab has to hold the file. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. Neither charge is required to unlock here. The free server file is PDF to Word, one file, up to 20 pages, and that page uploads. Unlock is not that offer. OCR and heavy compress are not free.
An empty password fails with "Enter the password you already know." A password that does not open the file fails with "That password did not open this PDF." Unlock does not crack a password and does not try another one. Protect PDF is the separate page, and it only locks a file with a password you choose. OCR uploads and needs a $6 day pass or the $60 year.
Steps
- Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
- Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
- Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.
Questions
Does unlock guess the password?
No. Unlock asks for a password the visitor already knows. An empty field fails with "Enter the password you already know." The worker uses that one string. It does not build a list and it does not crack a password you do not have.
Does unlock upload the PDF?
No. This runs in the browser tab, using the in-browser worker. The PDF is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. The download is one PDF named unlocked.pdf. PDF to Word is the page that uploads, one file, up to 20 pages.
What if the password is wrong?
The page stops with "That password did not open this PDF." The download is not saved. Unlock does not try a second password. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. Neither charge changes that stop.
Do I need an account before I unlock a file?
No. There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. Neither charge is required to unlock here. You need one of those only for a server job such as OCR, or for a PDF to Word after the free file.
