What this compress changes
Compress PDF re-saves the file in this tab. Basic compress does not downsample images. A text-heavy report can get smaller when the save is cleaner. A scan or a photo page usually stays near its old size, because those pictures were already compressed. The tool does not invent a percentage, and it does not promise that a portal will accept the file.
This compress runs in your browser. Open the network panel, drop a file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. The result has no PDF Commons watermark. Words that were selectable stay selectable. PDF to JPG is the tool that turns a page into a picture.
There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. The tab has to hold the file. A few dozen pages is the ordinary job. The day pass is $6 and does not renew. The year is $60. Neither charge is required to compress here. The free server file is PDF to Word, up to 20 pages, and that page does upload.
When a form names a size, use the matching page. Compress to 1 MB and compress under 2 MB run this same basic compress. If the result is still over the target, the page prints the size in KB and does not pretend the cap was met. Compress for email has no single number, because inboxes do not share one cap. If basic compress cannot hit the cap, heavy compress is the server step. That page uploads the PDF, downsamples photos to about 150 DPI, keeps the text as text, and deletes the file within 30 minutes. Heavy compress needs a $6 day pass or the $60 year.
Steps
- Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
- Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
- Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.
Questions
Will the text stay sharp?
Yes. Basic compress does not turn text into a picture and does not downsample. If the type looks soft, it was soft in the file you dropped.
What if it must be under 1 MB?
Open the 1 MB page, drop the same file, and read the note if the result is still over 1 MB. That note links to heavy compress. Heavy compress is a different tool. It is not a quieter run of basic compress.
Is this page an upload?
No. The network panel should show no PDF upload from this form. Heavy compress and PDF to Word are the pages that upload, and both say so before you drop the file.
Do I need an account for compress?
No. Local compress has no account. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. You need one of those only for a server job such as heavy compress, or for a PDF to Word after the free file.
