What these page numbers add
Add page numbers takes one PDF and a start number. The field is labeled Start at. It is a number field, and it begins at 1. The first page receives that start. Each later page receives the next whole number. A start of 7 on a two-page file prints 7 and then 8. The number is centered on the bottom in Helvetica at 12 points. The tool does not write "Page 1 of N". It writes only the integer. It does not find a number already printed on the page, and it does not remove one. The download is one PDF named numbered.pdf. It is not a zip. The original file is not rewritten. The result is still a PDF, so words that were selectable stay selectable. PDF Commons does not add its own watermark, logo, or trial line. A diagonal word belongs on Add watermark.
This runs in the browser tab, using the in-browser worker. The PDF is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, set Start at, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. The numbers are drawn in the tab. The browser offers numbered.pdf as the download. Closing the tab drops the copy. The form does not send the file elsewhere, and it does not ask for an email.
There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. The tab has to hold the file. The start must be a whole number from 1 through 999999. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. Neither charge is required to number pages here. The free server file is PDF to Word, one file, up to 20 pages, and that page uploads. Add page numbers is not that offer. OCR and heavy compress are not free.
An empty field, a start of 0, a fraction, or a number above 999999 fails with "Start at a whole number from 1." A file with no pages fails with "This PDF has no pages." A locked PDF fails with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined". This page does not know a password and does not guess one. Unlock PDF is the separate page. A wrong password there fails with "That password did not open this PDF." OCR uploads and needs a $6 day pass or the $60 year.
Steps
- Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
- Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
- Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.
Questions
Which number is printed on the first page?
The number in the field labeled Start at. The field begins at 1. The next page is one higher. A start of 7 prints 7 and then 8. The tool does not write "Page 1 of N" and does not skip a page. An empty field or a start of 0 fails with "Start at a whole number from 1."
Does page numbering upload the PDF?
No. This runs in the browser tab, using the in-browser worker. The PDF is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. The download is one PDF named numbered.pdf. PDF to Word is the page that uploads, one file, up to 20 pages.
Where does the number sit?
Bottom center, in Helvetica at 12 points. On a page at least 72 points tall, the baseline is 36 points from the bottom. On a shorter page, it is 8 points from the bottom. The tool does not move the number into a header. Add watermark is the separate page, and it stamps the words you type on a diagonal.
Do I need an account before I number pages?
No. There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. A day pass is $6 and does not renew. A year is $60. Neither charge is required to number pages here. You need one of those only for a server job such as OCR, or for a PDF to Word after the free file.
