How to get the SHA-256 hash of a PDF
This tool reads your file and gives you its SHA-256 hash, also called a checksum. It is a 64-character code that works like a fingerprint. You download it as a text file, hash.txt, with the code in lowercase letters and numbers. The same file always gives the same code. If even one byte changes, the code changes completely. Send the code to someone, and they can check that the file they received matches yours. The tool hashes the file exactly as it is. It does not open, read or change the pages inside. People use a hash to confirm a download is complete, to check that a contract was not changed, or to keep a record of exactly which version of a file they sent. Open the text file in any editor, such as Notepad or TextEdit.
Your file stays on your device. It is never uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the page. You only get the text file. That makes it safe for contracts, bank statements, medical records and other private files.
Getting a hash is free, with no account and no page limit. The only limit is your device's memory, so a very large file may not fit. There is nothing to install.
An empty file is fine. It gives the hash of nothing, e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855, followed by a new line. Password-protected files work too, because the tool never opens the file. If two hashes do not match, the files are not identical, even if they look the same. To remove the details saved in a file, use Remove document properties from PDF. To pull out the words, use PDF to text. Still stuck? Open the file in your PDF viewer first. If it opens there, try again. If it does not open, the file is damaged.
How to use this tool
- Choose your file. It never leaves your device.
- Pick a setting, if the page has one.

Common questions
What is inside hash.txt?
One line of 64 lowercase letters and numbers, the SHA-256 hash of your file, then a new line. An empty file gives e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855.
Is my PDF uploaded to get its hash?
No. Your file stays on your device and is never uploaded. You get one text file, hash.txt.
Does an empty file fail?
No. An empty file has a valid hash, so you still get hash.txt with the hash of zero bytes and a new line.
Is the PDF hash tool free?
Yes, it's free. No account, no daily limit, no watermark.
