What the Bates number says

Bates PDF takes one PDF, a prefix, and a start number. The prefix is trimmed before the line is drawn. Spaces at either end do not become part of the stamp. Page index i, starting at 0, receives the trimmed prefix joined to the digits of start plus i. There is no space between the prefix and the number. Prefix ABC and start 5 on three pages draws ABC5, then ABC6, then ABC7. The download is one file named bates.pdf. The worker loads the file with pdf-lib and embeds Helvetica at 12 points. The ink is black. The text is upright. The number sits at the bottom right. The right edge of the text is 36 points in from the right edge of the page. On a page at least 72 points tall, the baseline is 36 points up from the bottom. On a page shorter than 72 points, the baseline is 8 points up. A page that measures exactly 72 points still uses that 36 point baseline. Text already on the page stays. The document title stays. This is not Page X of Y, which draws one centered line and has no prefix. This is not Add page numbers, which draws an integer alone. The original file on disk is not rewritten.

The stamp runs in this tab with the open-source workers. The file is not uploaded. There is no GridFS copy. Closing the tab drops the copy. The browser downloads bates.pdf. Page X of Y writes numbered.pdf. The Word page at /pdf-to-word uploads.

There is no page cap on this stamp. The tab has to hold the file. No account is required here. This page does not need a pass. A day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. A year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to stamp a number here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress.

An empty file or bytes that are not a PDF stop with "This PDF could not be read." A file with no pages stops with "This PDF has no pages." Nothing left after trimming stops with "Enter a prefix." More than 20 characters stops with "Use 20 characters or fewer." A start outside the whole numbers from 1 to 999999 stops with "Enter a whole number from 1 to 999999." Zero, a fraction, a negative number, and a number past 999999 all use that same sentence. A locked file, opened without its password, stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined" when that is the pdf-lib error. Unlock PDF is separate. This page does not ask for a password and does not guess one.
