What Page X of Y draws

Page X of Y takes one PDF and draws the exact text "Page X of Y" on every page. This draws "Page X of Y" and the other page-number tool does not. X is the 1-based index of the page. Y is the page count of the whole file. A one-page file receives the text Page 1 of 1. A two-page file receives Page 1 of 2 and then Page 2 of 2. There is no option field and no Start at field. The download is one PDF named numbered.pdf. It is not a zip. The original file is not rewritten. The worker loads the file with pdf-lib and embeds Helvetica at 12 points. The color is near-black. The line is centered on the bottom. On a page at least 72 points tall, the baseline is 36 points up. On a page shorter than 72 points, the baseline is 8 points up. The line is real text in the content stream, so the words stay selectable. The tool does not remove a number already printed on the page. Text that already says 9 still says 9. It does not add a form field. Add page numbers is the other page-number tool. That page writes only an integer and asks where to start. This page does not. Nothing is rasterized. PDF Commons does not add its own watermark, logo, or trial line.

The line is drawn in this browser tab with the open-source workers. The PDF is not uploaded. There is no GridFS copy. Open the network panel, drop the file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. The browser downloads numbered.pdf. Add page numbers is the integer-only page. The Word page at /pdf-to-word uploads.

There is no page cap on this tool. The tab has to hold the file. There is no account on this page. This page does not need a pass. A day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. A year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to draw Page X of Y here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress.

An empty file stops with "This PDF could not be read." A file that cannot be opened stops with the same sentence. A file with no pages stops with "This PDF has no pages." A locked file, opened without its password, stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined". Unlock PDF is the separate page. This page does not ask for a password and does not guess one.

Steps

  1. Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
  2. Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
  3. Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.

Questions

What does a one-page file receive?

The text Page 1 of 1. The drawn line is always "Page X of Y". A two-page file receives Page 1 of 2 and Page 2 of 2. The other page-number tool does not draw that line. It writes only the integer. The font is Helvetica at 12 points, bottom center. The baseline is 36 points up, or 8 points up when the page is shorter than 72. The words stay selectable. An old number stays. No form field is added.

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. The draw runs in this tab. The file is not uploaded. Closing the tab drops the copy. You get numbered.pdf. The Word page uploads.

Does an existing number stay?

Yes. The tool does not remove a number already on the page. The new line is added as real text. It is not a form field. Helvetica at 12 points stays selectable. The page is not turned into a picture.

Does this page need the $6 day pass?

No. A $6 day pass lasts 24 hours, is charged once, and does not renew. A $60 year lasts 365 days. Neither charge is required to draw Page X of Y here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool.
