How to remove a password from a PDF

This tool removes the password from a PDF when you already know it. Type the password in the box labeled "Password you already know", then start. The new file opens without asking for a password, so you no longer have to type it each time. The box hides what you type, and your browser is asked not to save it. The tool tries only the password you typed. It does not guess. You download one PDF named unlocked.pdf, and it is still a normal PDF. Your original file is not changed. We do not add a watermark or a logo. To add a password instead, use Protect PDF.

Your file stays on your device. It is never uploaded, and your password is never sent anywhere. You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, go to the network panel and add a file. No upload appears. There is no sign-up, and when you close the page the copy in your browser is gone.

There is no page limit and no daily limit. A long PDF works as long as your device has enough memory to open it. Very large files, such as scans with hundreds of pages, can be slow on a phone or an older laptop. If your device runs low on memory, close other tabs or try a smaller file.

If you see a message asking for the password, the box was empty. Type it and try again. If the page says the password did not open the PDF, check for typos, capital letters and extra spaces, then try again. The tool will not try other passwords for you, and nothing is downloaded when the password is wrong. If you do not know the password, ask the person who sent you the file.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your file. It never leaves your device.
  2. Pick a setting, if the page has one.
  3. Download your new file.

Common questions

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

No. You must already know the password. The tool uses only what you type. It does not try a list of common passwords, and it cannot break a password you do not have. If you forgot it, ask the person who made the file.

Is my PDF uploaded when I unlock it?

No. Your file stays on your device. It is never uploaded, and neither is your password. Your download is unlocked.pdf. Only PDF to Word, OCR PDF and heavy compression send files to our server.

What if my password is wrong?

The page tells you the password did not open the PDF, and no file is downloaded. Check the spelling, capital letters and spaces, then try again.

Is it free to unlock a PDF?

Yes, it's free. No account, no daily limit, no watermark.
