What this resize changes

Resize PDF takes one PDF and one control named paper. The values are letter and a4, and letter is the default. Letter is PageSizes.Letter, 612 by 792 points. A4 is PageSizes.A4, 595.28 by 841.89 points. The worker creates a new document. For each page it calls embedPage and draws that embedded page on a new sheet of the chosen size. The source size is getWidth and getHeight. pdf-lib 1.17 reads the media box, so a rotation of 90 or 270 swaps those numbers before the fit. The scale is the smaller ratio of the sheet to the source, and both axes use it, so the aspect stays. The drawing is centered. A larger page scales down. A smaller page scales up. Nothing is cropped. Images are not downsampled. The worker does not add a letterhead or the words PDF Commons. The download is one PDF named resized.pdf, not a zip.

The resize runs in this tab with the open-source workers. The file is not uploaded. Closing the tab drops the copy. There is no email field on this page. Compress, organize, and PDF to JPG sit beside this tool.

There is no page cap on this tool. The tab has to hold the file. If the browser cannot keep the PDF, the resize cannot finish. There is no account on this page. This page does not need a pass. The day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. The year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to resize a PDF here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. That cap belongs to PDF to Word, OCR, and heavy compress. The free server file is one PDF to Word conversion, up to 20 pages, and it is not this page.

An empty file fails with "This PDF could not be read." A PDF with no pages fails with "This PDF has no pages." Any paper value other than letter or a4 fails with "Choose Letter or A4." A locked PDF stops with "Expected instance of PDFDict, but got instance of undefined", because the worker cannot read the encrypted page. Unlock PDF is the separate page.

Steps

  1. Drop the file. It stays in this tab.
  2. Set the one option on the page, if it has one.
  3. Download the result. Closing the tab drops the copy.

Questions

Does resize crop or stretch the page?

No. Each page is scaled to fit inside Letter or A4 and centered. The aspect stays. A wide page keeps its ratio and leaves blank paper on the sheet. A small page scales up. A large page scales down. The worker does not crop, and it does not downsample images. Letter is 612 by 792 points. A4 is 595.28 by 841.89 points.

Does resize upload the PDF?

No. It runs in this tab. The file is not uploaded. Open the network panel, drop the file, and the PDF should not appear as an upload. Closing the tab drops the copy. You get one PDF named resized.pdf. The original file on the computer is not rewritten. PDF to Word is the page that uploads.

Do the words stay selectable?

Yes, when the source had standard-font text. embedPage keeps that text in the drawing, so the words stay selectable. A page that says Hello still yields Hello after the resize. The tool does not turn the page into a picture. PDF to JPG makes a picture, and the text in that picture is not selectable.

Does this page need a pass?

No. This page does not need a pass. There is no account and no page cap on this local tool. The day pass is $6, charged once, for 24 hours, and it does not renew. The year is $60 for 365 days. Neither charge is required to resize here. The 20-page server cap is not this tool. A pass does not change Letter or A4. OCR, heavy compress, and PDF to Word after the free file are the jobs that charge.
