How to add Bates numbers to a PDF
Add Bates numbers stamps a prefix and a counting number on every page, like SMITH1, SMITH2, SMITH3. Type your prefix, up to 20 characters, and the number to start from, a whole number from 1 to 999999. Spaces at the ends of the prefix are removed. The prefix and the number are joined with no space. Numbers are not padded with zeros, so 5 shows as 5, not 000005. The stamp sits at the bottom right in black 12-point text, half an inch in from the right edge and half an inch up. It's real text. Your pages stay as they are, and numbers already printed on them are not removed. You get one file named bates.pdf, and your original is not changed. For plain page numbers with no prefix, use Add page numbers.
Your PDF stays on your device. It's never uploaded, and you don't need to share an email address. Your browser makes the new file and saves it as bates.pdf. When you close the page, nothing is left behind. That matters for legal files, which are often private.
Add Bates numbers is free. There's no account, no page limit, and no watermark. Very large files depend on your device's memory, so a huge PDF may not open. It works on one PDF at a time. To keep counting across several files, start each one where the last one ended.
If the prefix is empty or longer than 20 characters, you'll be asked to fix it. If the start number is not a whole number from 1 to 999999, you'll be asked for one. If your PDF won't open, it may be damaged or may not be a real PDF. Try another copy. Password-protected? It won't open here. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then try again.

Common questions
What does a Bates number look like?
The prefix and the number sit together with no space. Prefix SMITH and a start of 5 on three pages gives SMITH5, SMITH6, then SMITH7. The number is not padded with zeros. It is black 12-point text at the bottom right.
Is my PDF uploaded when I add Bates numbers?
No. Your file stays on your device. It's never uploaded. That keeps legal and private files safe. You get bates.pdf as a download, and your original file is not changed.
Where does the Bates number go on the page?
At the bottom right of every page. The text ends half an inch from the right edge and sits half an inch above the bottom edge. On a very short page, under one inch tall, it sits closer to the bottom.
Is Bates numbering free here?
Yes, it's free. No account, no daily limit, no watermark. Very large files depend on your device's memory.
