How to add page numbers to a PDF
Add page numbers puts a number at the bottom center of every page. Type the first number in the "Start at" box. It starts at 1. Each page after that gets the next number, so if you start at 7, page one shows 7 and page two shows 8. That helps when your PDF is one part of a longer document. You get plain numbers, not "Page 1 of 10". For that style, use Page X of Y. The numbers are small, plain 12-point text, and they are real text, so you can select and search them. Your own pages stay as they are. Numbers already printed on them are not removed, so check for old ones first. The new file is called numbered.pdf, and your original is not changed. We add no watermark or logo.
Your PDF stays on your device. It's never uploaded, and you don't need to share an email address. Your browser makes the new file and saves it as numbered.pdf. When you close the page, nothing is left behind.
Add page numbers is free. There's no account, no page limit, and no watermark. Very large files depend on your device's memory, so a huge PDF may not open. The first number must be a whole number from 1 to 999999.
If the "Start at" box is empty, is 0, or has a decimal or a number above 999999, you'll be asked to enter a whole number from 1. Type something like 1 or 7 and try again. If your PDF won't open, it may be damaged or may not be a real PDF. Try another copy. Password-protected? It won't open here. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then try again.

Common questions
How do I start page numbers at a number other than 1?
Type that number in the "Start at" box. It starts at 1. Each next page counts up by one, so a start of 7 gives 7, 8, and 9 on the first three pages. No page is skipped. Use a whole number from 1 to 999999.
Is my PDF uploaded when I add page numbers?
No. Your file stays on your device. It's never uploaded. Nobody else can see your pages. You get numbered.pdf as a download, and your original file is not changed.
Where do the page numbers go on the page?
At the bottom center of each page, about half an inch above the bottom edge. On very short pages, under one inch tall, the number sits closer to the edge. This tool does not put numbers at the top. To add words across the page instead, use Add a watermark to PDF.
Is it free to add page numbers to a PDF?
Yes, it's free. No account, no daily limit, no watermark. Very large files depend on your device's memory.
